Demographics
Once the global center of tire manufacturing, Akron's metro has shifted steadily toward Democrats at the presidential level as its blue-collar base contracted and a younger, college-educated workforce grew around the University of Akron and area health systems.
Across the recorded series it reached a Democratic high of thirty-eight points in 1936 and a Republican high of forty-four points in 1924. Between 2020 and 2024 the metro moved three points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was two points.
A population of 699,820, a 77% non-Hispanic-white share, and a median household income of $72,581 describe the metro.
