Danville anchors the southern Virginia Piedmont, where decades of textile and tobacco decline have redrawn voter coalitions. The metro's working-class majority and persistent poverty rate make it a reliable signal for statewide shifts among non-college white and Black voters.
Across the recorded series it reached a Democratic high of seventy-two points in 1936 and a Republican high of sixty-two points in 1972. Between 2020 and 2024 the metro moved four points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was twenty-one points.
A population of 102,070, a 60% non-Hispanic-white share, and a median household income of $50,089 describe the metro.
