Once a union stronghold anchored by steel mills on both banks of the Ohio, the Weirton-Steubenville metro has shifted sharply toward Republican margins since 2000 as manufacturing employment collapsed and the white working-class electorate realigned.
Across the recorded series it reached a Democratic high of forty-eight points in 1964 and a Republican high of forty-six points in 1924. Between 2020 and 2024 the metro moved four points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was forty-five points.
A population of 114,754, a 91% non-Hispanic-white share, and a median household income of $58,752 describe the metro.
