Anchored by Lake Superior's western tip, the Duluth metro has long blended union-household Democratic loyalty with rural conservative pressure from its Wisconsin and Minnesota hinterlands, producing competitive margins in statewide races.
Across the recorded series it reached a Democratic high of fifty-two points in 1964 and a Republican high of sixty-one points in 1904. Between 2020 and 2024 the metro moved three points toward the Republican candidate; the 2024 margin was ten points.
